Troublemakers, Trailblazers & Territory Politics. How independents challenged the system — and changed the NT

Join us to celebrate more than 50 years of independent voices in the NT Parliament and the International Day of Democracy, with an evening of Territory stories, colourful personalities and political history — and the troublemakers and trailblazers who helped shape it.

We’re excited to bring together esteemed panellists spanning different eras of Territory politics for a lively discussion moderated by our special guest Dr Richard Fejo, Larrakia Elder:

  • Dawn Lawrie OAM — Former Independent Member, Northern Territory Legislative Assembly (1974–1983)
  • Gerry Wood — Former Independent Member, Northern Territory Legislative Assembly (2001–2020)
  • Justine Davis MLA — Community Independent (2024–present)
  • Dr Robyn Smith — Political Historian, Charles Darwin University

From the early days of self-government to today, independent politicians have challenged the political establishment, defied expectations and even changed the course of Territory politics.

What does it take to stand outside the party system? What can an independent actually achieve? And what has changed — and what hasn't — over 50 years of NT politics?

Come along for the conversation, stay for the company. Bring a friend — everyone is welcome. Tea and coffee provided, drinks available for purchase.
